Updated all hyperlinks leading to the CHMP
website to point to the latter's new location. Nothing else new yet; I'm still
rebuilding my book collection, not to mention other elements of my life. I
still hope to have my life back to some semblance of normalcy within a month or
two.

My apologies once again, this time for not posting any new material at all
this summer. From mid June through early July, I was in England and Wales on
vacation. While there, I managed to gather a good deal of information on churches
in northwestern Nottinghamshire and southernmost West Riding Yorkshire, and was
looking forward to incorporating the material into Aedificium once I returned
home.
Unfortunately, on the 9th of July, my wife and our neightbors watched our
homes burn. At least 12 condominiums are a total loss, either burned to the
ground or damaged beyond repair, but overall we were
extremely lucky. Nobody was hurt, and we do have fairly comprehensive insurance.
Still, we did lose nearly all of our possessions, and a significant portion of my
books, notes, and drawings are now under the rubble. Obviously, all computer
equipment, etc. has been written off as well.
Thus, it may be a good deal longer than I had originally anticipated before I
will be able to upload anything new. Perhaps in the autumn, when things may have
settled down a bit and we aren't spending all our time dealing with insurance
companies and buying replacement items, I may have some spare time. For now, I
just feel lucky when I have a few minutes to relax.

Added a local map and description of Scrooby, a village on the Great
North Road in northernmost Nottinghamshire, to the Local
Maps page. The Scrooby of the twelfth century would be fairly unremarkable
were it not for the fact that it occasionally hosts the Archbishop of York
and his considerable entourage. I also added several new terms to the Glossary,
and modified a few existing definitions.
I apologize for the lengthy update hiatus. The work I have been doing
on the next version of the Mappa Hârnica Toolkit has, to my surprise,
taken much more time and energy than expected. In fact, it has occupied
most of my free time until recently, but I am happy to report that it is
proceeding well. I have begun writing the next installment of the Monastic
Life articles; this one will address the Augustinian
order. However, progress on that front has been slow for the reason mentioned
above.
In short, I hope to have some more new material to offer in the next
month or so, but obviously I cannot guarantee that this will be possible.
Nevertheless, the Augustinian article will eventually be written and made
available, and I expect to do much mapping in the coming months as well.

Corrected endnote and bibliographic citations that reference articles
within collected works. Previously, I had erroneously cited such works by
their titles and editors instead of their articles' titles and authors.
I realize that this isn't a particularly exciting update; however, I
haven't had time for anything more substantive in the last few weeks. I've
devoted most of my free time since this site's launch to working with
the other members of CHMP
on the next version of the Mappa Hârnica Toolkit. Since the Toolkit
was partly delayed by Aedificium's genesis, it's only fair that Aedificium
now wait its turn. I hope to have some time and energy available for mapping
or writing articles within another couple of weeks.

Placed a link to and description of Griffin
Grove Gaming on the Links page.
I also modified the Speculative Maps
page with the inclusion of a link to an off-site county
map of Nottinghamshire, as well as a description of and workarounds
for a problem that Internet Explorer 6.x users may encounter when viewing
Aedificium map images. Finally, I corrected a typo in the definition of
confraternity within the Glossary.
February 23, 2002
Added a statement to the Links page
concerning the ownership of the images used to represent other websites.
Also inserted some information about Aedificium's artwork into the Introduction
page in response to visitors' questions.
February 22, 2002
Made numerous minor changes, mostly to ensure that the site's pages
conform to the HTML 4.01 spec.

The site is finally launched! It's taken far too long to get to this
point, but at least
it happened.
As for future plans: I hope to have another map or two available soon.
The first of these will probably be a local scale two-pager depicting the
market town of Blyth, which is mentioned a few times in the text on the
Local Maps page. Blyth features
a Benedictine priory founded right around the time of the Domesday Book,
and is located at the point where the Great North Road crosses the River
Ryton in northwestern Nottinghamshire. Another map I'd like to have here
would use a paper scale of perhaps 1 cm = 1,000'; a parish scale map, if
you will, that would give viewers an idea of where each settlement is
relative to its neighbors. Finally, I'm planning on writing the
next of the Monastic Life articles;
this one will discuss the regular canons and canonesses of the Augustinian
order.
